WLAN Solutions

In an industry as dynamic and technology thirsty as the mobile world, the technology of today is often not yesterday's tomorrow. Thus with the operators launching 3G not so long ago it is no wonder the quest for next generation of wireless connectivity methods for data transfer is already on. One of the current solutions to the need of ever higher data throughput are WLANs (Wireless LANs), which in urban areas might even offer blanket coverage.

Psiloc has developed an application that now has de facto become an industry standard in WLAN. Hotspot Finder is a background application for both of the Symbian UI platforms (S60 and UIQ), whose goal is to perform periodic scans for WiFi networks. Whenever a hotspot is discovered, the application notifies the user of a newly discovered or a friendly hotspot within range.

WiFi Connect on the other hand is an application used to switch seamlessly between different WiFi networks and in the process increase the usability and user friendliness of WLAN connectivity methods. Whenever it comes in friendly WLAN network range, the mobile device automatically gains access to the data transfer. Gaining friendly connectivity also allows us to trigger the startup of chosen applications (such as the Web Browser, MoIP (Mobile VoIP) clients, synchronizing utilities or in that case any data hungry applications of choice). To identify friendly networks a double recognition method is used. Each hotspot is considered as friendly on the basis of either SSID (Service Set IDentifier) or MAC (Media Access Control) address. What we at Psiloc think is the most outstanding feature of this application, is its ability not only to roam through open and predefined WEP protected hotspots, but also automatically authenticate itself with walled garden types of hotspots.
